At Salterns, we have often been asked if we provide boats for home completion. Requests come for bare hulls which need knowledge, skill and some experience to complete, through to the wish to make the finishing touches and varnish an otherwise fully built boat. To meet this need, we offer the Sou’wester 18, a craft based on traditional West Country Working Boat lines, which matches the rest of the Salterns’ stable of excellent performing boats with a working pedigree. The Sou’wester’s length is 18'6", beam 7' with a 2' draft. She has slightly more freeboard than our Memory 19 class but carries similar ballast ratio of around 50%. She can be trailed by an average sized family saloon. If you want a traditional boat and the challenge of building your own, the Sou’wester 18 is here for you! It is always hard to price the cost of constructing this type of craft as, although there is a complete set of boatbuilder’s notes and drawings to build her as a typical small West Country fishing boat, many people will want a more complex specification with cabin and inboard engine, and so the costs can increase. We know that it is possible to construct the Sou’wester 18 from our complete set of mouldings in around 200 hours, and buying all the major components from ourselves, it will cost around £8,500. If you construct from a bare hull and make your own spars, and/or adapt second hand gear, great savings can be made........ It all depends on the time and skills you have!
